What was your reaction to being nominated and ultimately getting the news that you had won the Plater Medallion?
I was surprised and honored by both the nomination and selection. It is easy to get caught up in other things and forget the true importance and impact of the work being done. Being nominated and the process of filling out the application was a much needed reminder.

Can you tell us a little about the work you’ve done that led to this award?
I have been working at Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, an environmental nonprofit in Indianapolis, for three years. Over these three years I have served the organization in various capacities. I began by leading crews of high school students in tree maintenance activities around the city as part of the Youth Tree Team program. I later took on the role of intern for the KIB Clubs program, which builds outdoor classrooms for elementary schools in Marion County and works to create the next generation of environmental stewards. Most recently I have become the Pruning Coordinator at KIB. In this role I continue to work with high school aged youth as well as specially trained volunteers, structurally pruning trees around Indianapolis to ensure their longevity.

Who or what inspired your service-oriented mindset?
It is difficult to pinpoint the exact moment or person that inspired my desire to serve and give back. I think it is a combination of various family members, influential teachers, and a deep desire to preserve and protect everyone’s access to a safe, clean environment.

What has been your favorite part about studying at SPEA?
Being a SPEA student has been an incredible experience. My favorite part has been working with and learning from my fellow SPEA students. They are such an inspiration and push me to work harder and be the best version of myself I can be.

What’s next for you after graduation?
I am currently pursuing graduate school as an option. I hope to get a master’s in policy analysis and be accepted for a graduate assistantship. I hope to use this degree to do more in the way of serving the Indianapolis community and environment.
