Sustainability students can earn a scholarship through the O’Neill School that will help them cover the costs of their education while they work to make a difference in the world.
One of the Dean’s Council Scholarships, given by O’Neill Dean’s Council member Janet McCabe, is awarded to a graduate or undergraduate sustainability student at O’Neill. On January 15, 2021, McCabe was named as the next deputy administrator for Environmental Protection Agency.
In 2019–2020, the scholarship was awarded to O’Neill MPA student Gifty Amma Adusei, who earned her degree in Environmental Policy and Sustainability in 2019.
“My dream is to contribute to efforts geared at increasing the knowledge and penetration levels of sustainable practices,” Adusei says. “I hope to accomplish this by working directly with leading groups handling the unique challenges presented by modernization and environmental change.”
Adusei was first introduced to environmental management in her native Ghana. She says receiving this scholarship is helping her gain the training and certifications she needs to better serve community leaders, nonprofit organizations, and state agencies as they work to address local community development issues.
For the 2020–2021 academic year, Jeremy Mwaniki received the award. Like Adusei, he is pursuing an MPA in Environmental Policy and Sustainability. Mwaniki’s interest in protecting the environment began where he grew up—in Kenya. He says the country’s biodiversity and rich habitats helped him learn the importance of conserving biodiversity.
Mwaniki says the scholarship helped relieve the additional burden he faces while studying in the United States.
“As an international student, I have to pay a lot of out-of-pocket tuition expenses and am limited as to how many hours I can work,” he explains. “This scholarship will keep me motivated and help me out.”
